Handling Holiday Stress: Finding Support at Embrace Psychiatric Wellness Center

November 28, 2025

The holiday season is often described as “the most wonderful time of the year.” Yet for many, it can feel like the most difficult. Between family expectations, financial pressures, grief, and the shorter, darker days of winter, stress and sadness can easily overshadow the celebrations. In fact, surveys from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) show that nearly two-thirds of people living with mental health conditions report their symptoms worsen during the holidays. Another study found that three in five Americans feel their mental health is negatively impacted by this season.

At Embrace Psychiatric Wellness Center, we understand that holiday stress is real—and that you don’t have to face it alone. Whether you’re grieving, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling with depression, anxiety, or other conditions, our team is here to help you find balance, relief, and hope.

Why the Holidays Can Be Hard

The holidays bring unique challenges that can intensify mental health concerns:

  • Grief and loss: Memories of loved ones who are no longer with us can feel especially heavy during family-centered traditions and events.
  • Financial strain: Gift-giving and holiday expenses can create stress and anxiety.
  • Family dynamics: Complicated relationships may resurface during gatherings.
  • Seasonal changes: Shorter days and colder weather can trigger Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression linked to reduced sunlight.
  • Routine disruptions: Travel, events, and busy schedules often interfere with healthy habits like sleep, exercise, and therapy appointments.

Recognizing these stressors is the first step toward managing them. The next step is knowing where to turn for support.

Coping Strategies for Holiday Stress

Mental health experts recommend several practical strategies to help you navigate the season:

  • Accept your feelings: It’s okay to feel sad, anxious, or even conflicted during the holidays. Allow yourself compassion without judgment.
  • Maintain healthy habits: Prioritize sleep, nutrition, exercise, and therapy sessions to keep your mental health on track.
  • Set boundaries: Say no to commitments that feel overwhelming, whether it’s hosting, spending, or attending events.
  • Make time to connect: Reach out to supportive friends, family, or community groups. Connection fosters resilience.
  • Practice self-care: Schedule time for activities that recharge you—reading, walking, meditation, or simply resting.
  • Seek professional help: If stress or sadness feels unmanageable, reaching out to a mental health provider can make all the difference.

What to Expect When You Seek Help at Embrace PWC

Taking the step to seek care can feel daunting, especially during a stressful season. At Embrace Psychiatric Wellness Center, we make the process as compassionate and straightforward as possible.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Initial Contact: You can reach us by phone or through our online consultation form. Once you connect, our team will respond quickly—often the same day or within 24 hours. We’ll arrange a virtual prescreen appointment to learn more about your needs.
  • Virtual Prescreen: This 30-minute session with a medical specialist allows us to gather information about your history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. It’s a chance for you to share your story and for us to begin tailoring care to your unique situation.
  • First Appointment: After the prescreen, we’ll schedule your first visit with a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. A refundable $75 deposit secures your appointment and helps ensure continuity of care. Before your visit, we’ll verify your insurance benefits so you know exactly what to expect financially.
  • Diagnosis & Treatment Plan: During your appointment, our clinician will review your case and recommend next steps. This may include medication management, therapy, or advanced treatments. We emphasize patience and collaboration—psychiatry is a complex science, and finding the right approach takes time. Throughout the process, our team treats you with courtesy, respect, and compassion.
