Even though it’s sometimes difficult to detect, depression is one of the most common mental illnesses out there and can profoundly impact a person’s life. But when many of us think about depression, we associate it with mental, emotional, and behavioral symptoms. However, depression can also manifest a wide variety of physical symptoms that are sometimes quite challenging to manage. Here’s a closer look at some of these symptoms, along with a few useful ways for handling them.

Common Physical Symptoms of Depression

Depression can impact people differently, and some individuals might notice physical signs more than others. Here are a few of the most common indicators of depression:

  • Fatigue and Low Energy – Fatigue is perhaps the most prominent symptom of depression; those affected might feel tired and even unable to perform simple tasks.
  • Slower Psychomotor Activity – In addition to low physical energy, slowed bodily movements are also common. This can include sluggish movement, slurred speech, and so on.
  • Sleeping Disturbances – Depression can disrupt sleep patterns, causing both insomnia (difficulty falling asleep) and hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness).
  • Appetite Changes – Some people with depression eat more than usual, while others experience a loss of appetite. Both instances can result in unhealthy weight fluctuations.
  • Body Aches and Pains – Chronic pain, headaches, muscle aches, and stomach pain are all common physical markers of depression.
  • Digestive Issues – Research suggests a link between depression, anxiety, and digestive issues, all of which can contribute to an overall sense of discomfort.
  • Trouble with Self-Care Activities – Those who are depressed may also have difficulty with self-care and hygiene routines, including brushing and flossing, showering, grooming, wearing clean clothes, eating healthily, etc.

Effective Treatment Strategies for Depression

All of these physical symptoms can have serious ramifications if allowed to worsen, meaning that if you’re afflicted by depression, it’s time to seek professional help! Fortunately, there are many routes to pursue here; once you’ve been diagnosed, you can be prescribed the appropriate type of therapy, counseling, or medication (if necessary) and begin taking steps in the right direction. Sometimes, certain lifestyle changes and mind-body practices can also be added into the mix to aid with the management of physical symptoms; this includes things like yoga, a well-balanced diet, and high-quality sleep.

Depression’s impact extends far beyond emotional turmoil, and also encompasses a wide range of physical symptoms that can be quite debilitating at times. Addressing these symptoms isn’t always easy, but by seeking help and implementing effective strategies, you can manage both the emotional and physical aspects of the condition and work towards a more balanced, satisfying life!
